Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   The study extends the recently completed research on this subject. The completed study looked only at a tight range of soil properties and reviewers recommended to move forward with additional research to cover a larger range of cohesive soils. The results of this research will also benefit the new scour design concept based on “Hydraulic Loading and Soil Resistance” to determine the critical soil resistance for cohesive soil layers.
Goals:   The primary objective of this study is to develop design tools for scour in cohesive soils that will be implemented in Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 18, "Evaluating Scour at Bridges."
Product Type:   Research report
Test Methodology:   The study addresses the incipient erosion of cohesive soils. Scour on cohesive soils is a very complex phenomenon that is not completely understood. A special erosion apparatuses (ESTD, ISTD, LC-ISTD) were developed to apply hydraulic loading (flow) conditions on cohesive soil samples. The study will also research the correlation between geotechnical properties of cohesive soil samples and their erosion resistance.
Expected Benefits:   This research will develop a new design procedure to estimate bridge pier scour in cohesive soils.
Deliverables: Name: Design guidelines for scour in cohesive soils and to determine cohesive soil erosion resistance.
Product Type(s): Research report
