Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   Recent advances in concrete materials have led to a new generation of cementitious materials, namely ultra-high performance concrete. This concrete possesses advanced properties in terms of compressive behavior, durability, and tensile load carrying capacity. Ultra-high performance concrete attains these behaviors via an optimized gradation of cementitious materials, chemical admixtures, and steel fiber reinforcement. The current project investigates the flexural behavior of ultra-high performance concrete through the flexural testing of 16 medium scale mild steel reinforced rectangular beams. Ignoring the tensile capacity provided by the internal steel fiber reinforcement, the beams were designed to have similar cracking moment and ultimate flexural capacities. The test program will investigate five different reinforcement ratios and three different steel fiber reinforcement concentrations.
Goals:   The key project objective is to investigate the flexural performance of minimally reinforced ultra-high performance concrete components in order to facilitate appropriate uses of the material in the highway transportation sector.
Product Type:   Other
Test Methodology:   Structural testing techniques to investigate flexural performance of ultra-high performance concrete beams were used.
Other Information:   This project will provide needed information to bridge engineers in terms of fundamental ultra-high performance concrete performance and appropriate uses.
Expected Benefits:   The research project will provide fundamental knowledge regarding the flexural/tensile performance of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) when combined with discrete mild steel reinforcement.
Deliverables: Name: Flexural Response of Lightly Reinforced Ultra-High Performance Concrete Beams
Product Type(s): Other
Description: The product is a conference paper detailing preliminary findings from the research program. The paper, authored by Meade and Graybeal, was presented and published in association with the fib 2010 conference held in Washington, DC in May 2010.
