To all who are celebrating the festival of lights across America and around the world, happy Diwali. As Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists light the diya, shar...e in prayers, decorate their homes, and open their doors to host and feast with loved ones, we recognize that this holiday rejoices in the triumph of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It also speaks to a broader truth about our shared American experience. It's a reminder of what's possible when we see beyond the differences that too often divide us. It's a reflection of the hopes and dreams that bind us together. And it's a time to renew our collective obligation to deepen those bonds, to stand in each other's shoes and see the world through each other's eyes, and to embrace each other as brothers and sisters - and as fellow Americans.
I was proud to be the first President to host a Diwali celebration at the White House in 2009, and Michelle and I will never forget how the people of India welcomed us with open arms and hearts and danced with us in Mumbai on Diwali. This year, I was honored to kindle the first-ever diya in the Oval Office - a lamp that symbolizes how darkness will always be overcome by light. It is a tradition that I hope future Presidents will continue.
On behalf of the entire Obama family, I wish you and your loved ones peace and happiness on this Diwali.

“Our country does best when everyone gets their fair shot” —President Obama on National Disability Employment Awareness Month. In 2010, President Obama challenged the federal government to hire 100,000 people with disabilities within 5 years. By 2015, we reached that goal, hiring over 109,000 people with disabilities—and leading to the highest percentage of people with disabilities in federal service in the last 35 years. We’ve made progress to make our workplaces more inclusive, but there’s still more work to do: go.wh.gov/66zGbd

In a 21st century economy, affordable, high-quality child care isn't a nice-to-have, it's a must-have for working families.
High child care costs keep some parents out of the workforce. When parents who want to pursue a career can’t afford to, that’s a problem. It's time we #CareAboutCare.
Big news: In 2015, for the first time in history, renewable energy surpassed coal as the largest source of global electricity capacity. Since President Obama took office, wind power has tripled and solar power has grown more than 30-fold here in the United States. A teacher in Nebraska who was trying to earn extra money during the summer but couldn't take a job selling pet food because of a previous summer job. A salesman... in Connecticut who lost almost all his retirement savings because, at 56, he wasn’t allowed to get another job in his field for two years after being laid off. A doctor in North Carolina who couldn’t continue to deliver care to patients. A woman in Ohio who, after having the courage to leave an abusive marriage, was threatened with lawsuits for taking an entry-level sales job at a new company.
Back in May, I wrote about the importance of a labor market where workers get a fair shot to compete for higher wages. I called on all of you to share your stories of times when you weren’t treated fairly; when your wage was unfairly held down because of collusion, or when you couldn’t get a new job because of a non-compete agreement. I received an incredible response like the stories I just mentioned.
And today, after reading your stories, we're delivering on our promise to put forward a call-to-action to states to address the misuse of non-competes. Here's how we're asking states to help build a labor market where everyone gets a fair shot at a decent wage, at a wage they deserve: http://go.wh.gov/LetUsCompete #LetUsCompete

One year ago today, I stood in the Rose Garden of The White House next to Jill and President Obama, and announced that my one regret in not running was that I w...ould not be the President who presided over the end of cancer. We know it is possible. The science, medicine, and technology are progressing faster than ever to save countless sons and daughters. And after a year of traveling across the country and the world, meeting with thousands of cancer patients, physicians, researchers, philanthropists, technologists, heads of states and industry leaders, and reimagining and changing the culture of the government and private sector’s fight, I'm proud this week to have released a report to President Obama and the American people about where we are and where we need to go in the future. Read our #CancerMoonshot report yourself to see how far we've come in one year and the work still ahead at medium.com/Cancer-Moonshot.
