The following are accepted by MVD as proof of identity:

  A birth certificate is a vital record that documents the birth of a child. A certified copy of a birth certificate can be obtained through the State Vital Records office in the state or territory of your birth. Hospital birth records do not qualify as birth certificates.

  A birth certificate is a vital record that documents the birth of a child. A certified copy of a foreign birth certificate with a notarized English translation will need to be obtained from the appropriate agency in the country of your birth. Hospital birth records do not qualify as birth certificates.

  The Department of State issues a DS-1350 to U.S. citizens in the U.S. who were born outside the U.S. and acquired U.S. citizenship at birth. When the birth is recorded as a Consular Report of Birth (FS-240), certified copies of the Certification of Report of Birth Abroad (DS-1350) are issued by the Department of State in Washington, D.C.
  In 1990, U.S. consulates ceased to issue Form-545, but it is still acceptable documentation.

  These documents can usually be obtained through your tribal government or your Bureau of Indian Affairs Regional Office.

• Valid permanent resident card issued by the United States government | View Example

  A permanent resident is someone who has been granted authorization to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. As proof of that status, a person is granted a permanent resident card, commonly called a ‘green card’ by the U.S. Government.

  Documents must show your legal name, date of birth and Court seal, and must be signed by the court authority.

  If you do not have an original marriage certificate/ license, certified copies can be obtained through the State Vital Records office in the state in which you were married.

The following are accepted by MVD as proof of identity as long as the document was not also used as proof of identification number

• Driver license, learner’s permit or identification card issued by the US government or by a state or territory of the US, or by a jurisdiction of Canada, as long as it has a photograph and has not been expired more than one year | View Example

• Matricula Consular card issued after February 1, 2005 by the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque or El Paso | View Example

  The Matricula Consular is an identification card issued by the Government of Mexico, through its consulate offices, to Mexican nationals residing outside of Mexico.

• Valid passport issued by a country of citizenship | View Example

  Valid US Passport

  A passport is a document, issued by a national government, which certifies, for the purpose of international travel, the identity and nationality of its holder. The elements of identity are name, date of birth, sex, and place of birth.

  These documents can usually be obtained through your tribal government or your Bureau of Indian Affairs Regional Office.

  The US Military, the Coast Guard and the NM National Guard issue identification document cards to its enlisted members or members’ dependents. Documents must show your Social Security number.

  The Department of Veterans Affairs issues photo Veterans Identification Cards.

• Valid US active-duty, retiree or reservist military ID (DOD ID DD-2) | View Example

  A United States Military ID is an identity document issued by the United States Department of Defense to identify a person as a member of the Armed Forces or a member's dependent, such as a child or spouse.

Items NOT accepted by MVD as proof of meeting this requirement include:

• Baptismal Certificate
• Library Card
• Hospital Birth Record
• Retail Membership Card
• Auto Club Card
• Gym Membership Card

If you are not eligible for a social security number, you will need to bring the following documents to any MVD Field Office:

• One (1) proof of Identification number - No SSN, and
• One (1) proof of identity - No SSN, and
• Two (2) proofs of New Mexico residency
