To Change Your Driver License Number on the Replacement License

If your New Mexico driver license is lost or stolen, and you want your replacement license to have a different driver license number, you must notify the police department and file a report. Then, bring the following to a MVD Field Office:

  • A copy of the Police Report
  • A signed statement saying that you want MVD to issue you a new driver license number because your old license was lost or stolen.

At MVD, you will sign a form surrendering your old driver license number, and the Field Office clerk will submit your information for verification. You should be able to pick up your temporary replacement driver license with a new license number within 48 hours. Your regular replacement license will be mailed to you.

To Keep the Same Driver License Number on the Replacement License

If your New Mexico driver license is lost or stolen, and you want to keep the same driver license number for the replacement license, you can go online or to an MVD Field Office and request a replacement license.

You will be issued a temporary replacement driver license.
Your regular replacement license will be mailed to you.
