What is a Registration?

All motor vehicles or trailers must be registered with the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), unless a registration is not required under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90 Section 9. A registration is also called a Certificate of Registration (UR-1) and bears owner, vehicle, and insurance information as well as an assigned registration number and the Registrar's signature. A registration that does not have the Registrar's signature is not a valid registration.

Registered motor vehicles and trailers must display the registration plate or plates, depending on the plate type. The registration plate displays the vehicle registration number and the type of registration.
