If you applied for disaster assistance and get a letter from FEMA saying that you’re ineligible, keep these things in mind:

- Read the letter carefully. You may just need to submit missing documents, such as proof of residence or proof of ownership.

- Call us at 1-800-621-3362 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) if you would like to talk to someone one-on-one about your options or if you have questions on the appeals process.

Manufactured Housing Units are customized to meet the needs of each household living in these temporary homes. Eligible Louisiana residents are able to receive units tailored to their needs. For example, accessible units may have additions like wheel chair ramps, handrails, and wider doorways to accommodate people with a disability. Did you register for disaster assistance after Hurricane Matthew? Did you receive a letter or other correspondence from us that says you’re ineligible?

You may simply need to provide additional documentation, such as insurance information. It’s important to carefully read letters and other information provided by FEMA because they include explanations of what steps need to be taken to have the status of your request for assistance reconsidered.

You can ask us to review your application again if you appeal the decision within 60 days of receiving the letter. If you have questions, call our helpline at 800-621-3362 or take the letter to a disaster recovery center. Survivors who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have difficulty speaking and use a TTY should call 800-462-7585.

Disaster recovery centers are staffed by representatives from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Small Business Administration, National Flood Insurance Program specialists, volunteer groups and other agencies. These representatives are available to provide information about disaster assistance, flood insurance, personal and property risk reduction and low-interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses.

Louisiana flood insurance policyholders: File Proof of Loss with your insurance agent as soon as possible so it can be settled and assist you in moving forward with your recovery. Residents and businesses impacted by the August floods have 120 days (extended from the standard 60 days) from the date of the loss to file the claim. Congratulations to East Hartford, CT for completing their Integrated Emergency Management Course. This four day training course was designed specifically for their jurisdiction, and included both lecture and exercise-based training on response operations for flooding.
