Project detail
Project Description:   This project investigates the driving behavior in terms of car-following for work zones and comparing it to nonwork zone conditions. The overall objective of this project is to calibrate vehicle behavior specific to work zones in microsimulation to optimizing work zone throughput. This project will use an Instrumented Research Vehicle (IRV) equipped with global positioning systems (GPS), speed sensors, cameras, data acquisition systems, and Universal Medium Range Radar (UMRR) systems to measure the gaps and headway in real-time at 10 Hz. The study will use the data from 64 participants who were recruited to drive the IRV through a Living Laboratory (LL) set up along I-95 in Virginia to capture their car-following behavior. The data collected will be used to calibrate car-following models in simulation.
Goals:
(1) Evaluate the driver behavior and response while driving in work zones.
(2) Collect real-time gap data for vehicles traveling in the work zone.
(3) Examine the data with current psychophysical car-following equations.
(4) Develop specific thresholds parameters with real-time data and the observed driving behavior to advance modeling and simulation of work zones.
Background Information:   This study will involve many units within the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. Such offices include but are not limited to the Office of Traffic Operations, Office of Traffic Management, Office of Safety Research and Development, and Office of Operations Research and Development. The University of Central Florida, Civil Environmental and Construction Engineering Department, is also a partner in this project.
Field Test:   There will be two field tests: Instrumented Vehicle and Driving Simulator.
Product Type:   Article
Conference displays
