Project Description: | With recent advances in two-dimensional (2-D) decomposition methods and laser sensor technology, a new method of analyzing two- and three-dimensional (3-D) texture and relating these texture profiles to tire-pavement noise is possible. Texture is related to all the functional surface characteristics parameters. When the relationship between texture profiles and friction, and texture and tire-pavement noise is established, many of these significant functional parameters can be reliably predicted with one texture measurement. The development of the texture-noise relationship is one part of the surface characteristics model that will integrate texture, tire-pavement noise, smoothness, and friction. As texture measurements are possible at highway speeds, the results of this research would also have applications for agencies to perform network-level management of smoothness, texture/friction, and tire-pavement noise.

Expected Benefits: | Texture is related to all the functional surface characteristics parameters. When the relationship between texture profiles and friction, and texture and tire-pavement noise is established, many of these significant functional parameters can be reliably predicted with one texture measurement. As texture measurements are possible at highway speeds, the potential is there to have network-level management of smoothness, texture/friction, and tire-pavement noise.
Deliverables: | 1. Name: Final report. Product Type(s): Research report, Data Description: The deliverable is a final report documenting the research approach, key findings, recommendations, and implications. 2. Name: Stand-alone guide. Product Type(s): Research report, Draft standard, specifications, or guidelines Description: The deliverable is a stand-alone guide to provide guidelines regarding: (A) A synchronized texture-smoothness-noise acquisition platform.(B) A process of reducing texture-smoothness-noise to their intrinsic components.(C) A comprehensive model to identify the sources of tire-pavement interaction noise.(D) Recommendations discovered during the conduct of this work on how to consider other fundamental pavement surface measurements e.g. splash spray, near pavement surface measurements using ground penetrating radar, and multispectrum infrared data. 3. Name: Analytical tools. Product Type(s): Software, Data, Hardware Description: Along with the final report, deliver the hardware, dataset, annotated source, executable code, and required Federal Highway Administration documentation for software developed for users under this project (if applicable).
