Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   The purpose of this activity is to capitalize on recent laboratory fatigue and rutting characterization studied in conjunction with Accelerated Pavement Testing Facility Performance. Flow number and axial push-pull characterization now have a measure of credibility as a surrogate test to full-scale Accelerated Pavement Testing Facility loading.
Goals:   To provide a more robust and discriminating rutting and fatigue laboratory characterization of mixtures tested in full scale in TPF-5(0127) & SPR-2(174).
Product Type:   Research report
Expected Benefits:   The payoffs are more accountable binder purchase specifications leading to more efficient construction; expanding the set of materials characterized in axial push-pull to explore more practical variations on the theory and protocols which advance the test towards implementation; and partnering with the Federal Highway Administration Office of Infrastructure to demonstrate mixture characterization tools and binder specifications on the mobile asphalt trailer.
Deliverables: Name: Performance Testing for Superpave and Structural Validation
Product Type(s): Research report
Description: Final Report from TPF-5(019) and SPR-2(174).
Project Findings:   The confined tests in the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT) had an improved rank order association (like a correlation) to Accelerated Load Facility (ALF) rutting compared to unconfined tests. Simplified viscoelastic continuum damage tests have time savings advantages over classical beam fatigue, rank well with full-scale fatigue cracking, and have the potential to be run in the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT), which is now possible.
