Project detail
Roadmap/Focus area(s):   Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap
Project Description:   Recently, more emphasis has been placed on the use of lightweight or specified density concrete as a solution for several bridge applications. The properties of these materials facilitate deployment of structural components that weigh less, require smaller construction equipment, have extended span ranges, and have reduced inertia forces. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials specifications for designing with these materials have not been significantly updated since the 1960s. This work, along with the work of National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 18-15, intends to update the specifications appropriately for the modern version of these materials.
Goals:   This project aims to recommend design specifications for the transfer and development length of prestressing strand in lightweight high-performance concrete girders.
Product Type:   Other
Test Methodology:   Full-scale physical testing of structural members in combination with all necessary computational analysis.
Other Information:   Full-scale physical testing began in May 2009 and was completed in February 2010. There were 24 full-scale girder tests within this project.
Expected Benefits:   Research findings will facilitate a revision of the lightweight concrete provisions in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications.
Deliverables: Name: FHWA Research Program on Lightweight High-Performance Concrete – Development Length of Prestressing Strand
Product Type(s): Other
Description: The deliverable is a manuscript presenting preliminary results from the research study. This was presented in the proceedings of the 2010 Concrete Bridge Conference, which was held in Phoenix, AZ.
