About

The History Behind Volunteer Houston
Supporting the Texas Gulf Coast Region since 1974.

In 1974, a group of Houstonians who were very involved in the philanthropic community realized that the growing number of nonprofit organizations needed a better way to engage citizens as volunteers in providing service to the community. After a national search for a solution, they organized a local Volunteer Center to serve as a clearinghouse for volunteers.

For 41 years, Volunteer Houston has been the city's sole referral service connecting volunteers to a broad spectrum of diverse nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations all around Houston and its vicinity rely on Volunteer Houston to acquire over 50,000 volunteers per year.

  • 118 million dollar value to Houston
  • 952 agencies and 1,159 volunteer opportunities
  • 50,000 volunteers each year
  • 4.8 million volunteer hours in 2015
