Longitudinal Employment and Household Dynamics (LEHD)

The Longitudinal Employment and Household Dynamics (LEHD) program is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. LEHD is potentially an alternate/additional source of place of work and flow data. LEHD links State Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) with federal administrative records. Data covers 90% of the total US workforce. Since Spring of 2012, the LEHD program has started including federal - employment (excluding military jobs) and self - employment data. The civilian federal employees are tracked by the U.S. Office of Personnel's Management data files. The self-employed jobs are identified by using tax data. We encourage the transportation community to evaluate these data at small geography and identify problem areas and approaches to improve data quality.
LEHD program makes several data products that can be used to understand the workforce dynamics of specific groups. The data includes both publicly available data and restricted-use micro data. Quarterly Workforce Indicator (QWI) and LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) are publicly available. Caution! USDOT recommends that this data be carefully reviewed before use in any transportation application.
The following reporting and mapping tools are available that were developed based on the public-use data.
- OntheMap V 6.2 was released in December 2013. This tool uses Longitudinal Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) version 7 data. This release includes 50 states. The release does not include MA, PR and VI. OntheMap provides dynamic web-based maps that show the relationship between where people live and where they work, by county, city and census tract and block. The current version uses 2010 census block defined in 2010 decennial census. Much of the data is modeled or synthesized, so that individual confidentiality is protected. - QWI Explorer is a web-based tool that allows the users to understand Quarterly Workforce Indicator dataset through charts and interactive tables. Beta version of this tool was released on July 2014. The tool is available at http://qwiexplorer.ces.census.gov/
- OnTheMap for Emergency Management is a web-based tool that provides real-time information on population and workforce statistics for the areas being affected by natural disasters. The version 4.0 was released on June 2014. The tool is available at http://onthemap.ces.census.gov/em/
- LED Extraction Tool provides access to raw public-use data created through Longitudinal Employment Data (LED) partnership. The version 2.0 was released on 2014. The tool is available at http://ledextract.ces.census.gov/
