OUR MISSION

AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) strengthens communities and develops leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. In partnership with non-profits—secular and faith based—local municipalities, state governments, federal government, national and state parks, Indian tribes, and schools, members complete service projects throughout the region they are assigned.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women age 18-24. Members are assigned to one of five campuses — Denver, CO; Sacramento, CA; Baltimore, MD; Vicksburg, MS; and Vinton, IA.

Drawn from the successful models of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and the U.S. military, AmeriCorps NCCC is built on the belief that civic responsibility is an inherent duty of all citizens and that national service programs work effectively with local communities to address pressing needs.

Which path is right for you?

AmeriCorps National Civilian Community CorpsThe AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (N-triple-C) is one program with two unique service experiences. The first, Traditional Corps, is our original, rugged, and demanding service experience designed to strengthen communities and build America’s next generation of leaders. Within traditional corps, you can serve as a corps member or a team leader. As a corps member, you serve ten months alongside a diverse team of 18 to 24 year olds. Our traditional corps does hands-on projects in a field setting while traveling regionally and working with a variety of organizations. Critical to the success of a traditional corps member is being a team player while setting and reaching personal and team goals. Traditional corps members earn a $4,000 living allowance and a $5,775 education award upon completion of the program. Within traditional corps, you also have the opportunity to serve as a team leader. Traditional team leaders serve 11 months, which includes an added month of leadership and supervisory skills training. Traditional corps team leaders will lead a diverse team of 18 to 24 year olds, but themselves can be older than 24. Traditional team leaders will travel regionally while working with a variety of organizations, all the while managing team dynamics and facilitating member development. Traditional team leaders earn a $12,500 living allowance and a $5,775 education award upon completion of the program.The other service experience AmeriCorps (N-triple-C) offers is called FEMA Corps. FEMA corps is an immersive professional experience designed to build leaders and strengthen our national’s capacity to prepare for and respond to disasters. Within FEMA corps, you can serve as a corps member or a team leader. As a corps member, you serve ten months alongside a diverse team of 18 to 24 year olds. Our FEMA corps does skill building projects in a field or office setting while traveling nationally and working directly with the Federal Emergency Management agency (FEMA). Critical to the success of a FEMA corps member is being a team player while setting and reaching goals. FEMA corps members earn a $4,000 living allowance and a $5,775 education award upon completion of the program. Within FEMA corps, you also have the opportunity to serve as a team leader. FEMA corps team leaders serve 11 months, which includes an added month of leadership and supervisory skills training.   • Previous service as a corps member is not required to apply for team leader positions.

TRADITIONAL CORPS

AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women ages 18-24. AmeriCorps NCCC members are assigned to one of five regional campuses into teams of approximately ten members, and complete 2- to 3-month projects responding to local communities’ needs in every state. Teams serve with local and national organizations, infusing resources and leading volunteers for hundreds of organizations. These young adults lead youth development activities, construct and rehabilitate low-income housing, clean up streams, help communities develop emergency plans, and address other pressing local needs.

  • Filling and installing sandbags for local communities to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters
  • Educating people on sustainability and energy conservation practices
  • Constructing or repairing hiking trails in local and national parks across America
  • Receiving, inventorying, and distributing donated food and other goods
  • Removing exotic vegetation and planting new trees
  • Making facilities handicap accessible and installing informative public signs
  • Directly assisting veterans, homeless, and senior citizen populations
  • Constructing and rehabilitating low-income housing

FEMA CORPS

FEMA Corps is an NCCC track for young adults who want to gain professional skills in emergency management while serving with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) staff on disaster response and recovery efforts. It is a 10 month, full-time, team-based residential service program that was developed in partnership with FEMA and the Corporation for National and Community Service, the agency that oversees AmeriCorps NCCC. As a member, you’ll be assigned to one of five NCCC campuses. Your focus will solely be on emergency management and long-term recovery activities within FEMA.

  • Educating communities, assessing needs, and collecting information
  • Developing materials that promote disaster preparation to the public
  • Ordering materials, tracking inventory, loading supplies, and managing IT equipment
  • Updating electronic files, managing data, and compiling reports
  • Working with nonprofits and government agencies to coordinate services for disaster survivors
  • Helping survivors complete applications for disaster assistance
  • Assessing and reporting damage to public facilities
  • Setting up shelter operations and re-unification of families and pets

BECOMING A MEMBER

AmeriCorps NCCC members serve for a 10-month commitment in teams of 8 to 12 and are assigned to projects throughout the region served by their campus. They are trained in CPR, first aid, public safety, and other skills before beginning their first service project. Members are based at one of five regional campuses and travel to complete service projects throughout those regions.

AmeriCorps NCCC is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens between 18 and 24 years old, and members serve full time during a period not to exceed 12 months. Members are given a living allowance of approximately $4,000 for 10 months of service; housing; meals; limited medical benefits; up to $400 a month for childcare if eligible; member uniforms; and become eligible for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the program.

  1. Clicking "Submit Application" above will take you to a page with all of our open listings.
  2. Notice your 3 options when choosing a listing:
    • Choose a Corps: FEMA Corps or Traditional Corps
    • Choose a Position: Corps Member of Team Leader
    • Choose a Class: Fall, Summer or Winter, each class will have a different start date.
  3. Click on the listing that best fits you and keep in mind you can submit an application to more than one listing.
    • NOTE: If you are submitting an application for a Team Leader position, you will be asked to complete 2 additional essay questions and an assessment.

  1. Within 1 week of submitting an application, you will receive an Application Acknowledgement Packet in the mail
  2. Following the instructions in your packet, contact the National Service Hotline to make your Eligibility Call.
    • Hotline staff will provide additional information about AmeriCorps NCCC and FEMA Corps. You will be asked to answer 9 yes or no questions to determine your eligibility for service
    • During this call, you will also be assigned an assessment date

PLEASE NOTE: Unless additional information is required from you, you will not be contacted on the date of your assessment

  • You must have two complete references
    At least one must be from a professional source
  • If your references have not completed their reference form, you can send them a reminder from the references section of your MyAmeriCorps account – sign-in here

07 | Prepare for Service

  1. Once selected to serve at a campus and cleared legally and medically, receive your Welcome Packet via email and inside you’ll find information about your campus, your living stipend, a helpful packing list and more!
  2. Complete the forms included in your Welcome Packet and return them to your campus – your travel to campus will not be booked if these forms are not received
  3. Join your class Facebook page, and get to know your fellow members
  4. Receive your travel itinerary one to two weeks prior to campus arrivalvia email
  5. Arrive on campus and begin service!

Once you have completed these steps, you are at 100% and ready to depart for service!
