Maritime Border Security

Maritime Border Security

BMD develops and transitions technical capabilities that enhance U.S. maritime border security by helping safeguard lawful trade and travel and disrupting and dismantling transnational criminal and terrorist organizations.

Major Projects

Arctic Communications and TechnologiesBoat on the water

Once inaccessible, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is now extending operations into the Arctic in areas that are ice-free during summer months. To support those USCG missions, BMD is identifying and evaluating appropriate terrestrial radio frequency and space-based solutions. This will allow for the implementation of reliable communications in the Arctic, which are essential for safe and effective operations.

Port and Coastal Surveillance

BMD is developing solutions to improve maritime situational awareness, informational analytics and information sharing and distribution. These solutions will enable DHS to issue an appropriate and rapid tactical response to maritime threats. Additionally, these solutions will enhance strategic planning and resource allocation at the regional and national level. BMD’s work will dramatically improve the maritime domain awareness of DHS components in the coastal regions of the United States, increasing small vessel interdiction efficiency.
