Job Roles
Jobs roles at FEMA consist of:
- Job title and
- Series & Grade
Each position is further classified by work type, which indicates the duration and other factors a position. In a job announcement, this is found next to "Position Info."
Series & Grade
Searches for vacant positions on USAJOBS.gov are often done based on a job title, which indicates its subject matter, but understanding what the Series & Grade mean is also helpful.
Series
Series indicates the pay scale and job family of Professional and Trade, Craft, or Labor occupations.
For example, the job of "Emergency Management Specialist" has a series and grade of "GS-0089-12." "GS-0089" is the series, which indicates that it's part of the General Schedule pay scale and the "0000 - Miscellaneous Occupations" job family. This job family is described as, "Positions whose duties are to administer, supervise, or perform work that cannot be included in other occupational groups either because the duties are unique, or because they are complex and come in part under various groups." You can find the description for all job families on the list of Federal Occupational Groups at USAJOBS.gov.
Grade
Grade indicates the job's level within its pay scale.
For example, the job title of "Emergency Management Specialist" has a series and grade of "GS-0089-12." "12" is the grade, which indicates its pay level on the General Schedule's pay table.
