Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) - And Meals After Disaster

Program Description

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) or “Summer Meals" provides free, healthy meals to children of low-income families, or in disaster-affected areas, during the summer or any other times when school is not in session.

After a disaster, state agencies, School Food Authorities, and sponsors may open program sites when schools or daycare centers must stay closed. Program regulations allow fast approval of feeding sites in an emergency (7 CFR §225.6(c)).

General Program Requirements

All children and teens (age 18 and under) who go to an approved feeding site can get free meals. Sites for adults in learning programs for the disabled may also be able to participate.

After a disaster, approved groups may be able to open emergency sites. If a community is in need, the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) Regional Offices may waive the rule to serve meals only in low-income areas. State agencies may also waive the rule that schools can’t be used as feeding sites if a school is closed but buildings are unharmed by the disaster.

Application Process

All children (age 18 and under) can get free meals at an approved site. There’s no application required.
