HUD Public Housing Program

Program Description

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Public Housing Program helps low-income families, and the elderly or disabled get decent, safe rental housing. This could include housing from single-family houses to high-rise apartments.

General Program Requirements

Public housing is limited to low-income households. Your eligibility is based on:

  • Annual gross income
  • Elderly or disabled status
  • U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status

If you qualify, a public housing agency (PHA) will check your references. They need to make sure you’ll be a good tenant. If your history shows you may have a harmful effect on other tenants or the project's status, your request will be denied.

To learn more, visit HUD’s Public Housing Program page for details.

Application Process

To apply for a voucher, contact your local PHA.
