Direct Home Loans for Native Americans

Program Description

The Native American Direct Loan (NADL) program makes home loans available to Native American Veterans who qualify. You may use the loan to buy, build, or improve a home on federal trust land, or to reduce the interest rate on an existing VA NADL.

Veterans who are not Native American, but who are married to a Native American non-Veteran, may qualify for a loan under this program.

General Program Requirements

To get a NADL, the law requires that:

  1. You must be an eligible Native American Veteran.
  2. The tribal organization or other proper Native American group must agree to participate in the NADL program. They must also have a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The MOU must spell out the conditions on how the program will operate on its trust lands.
  3. You must have or apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
  4. You must use the loan to buy, build, or improve a home on Native American trust land.
  5. You must live in the home. Loans may not be used for rental or investment homes.
  6. You must be a suitable credit risk.

VA deems Commissioned Officers of the Public Health Service (PHS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are considered active duty members and Veterans once discharged.

Length-of-service requirements apply, in most cases.

You are encouraged to contact your local housing authority and VA first. This way you can discuss your financial situation and get an idea of whether or not you may qualify for a home loan.
