#OpenDOT: We need YOUR ideas!

Seven years ago, President Obama signed the Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government laying the groundwork to build a more open and transparent government.

Across the Administration, agencies are working to update our biennial Open Government Plans, and we want to hear from YOU. As part of the Department’s commitment to openness and engagement, DOT will be hosting a Twitter chat on Monday, August 29 at 3:00pm ET to hear your suggestions on how best to build on our progress.

In DOT’s first OpenGov plan, our flagship initiative emphasized participation. In 2012, our flagship initiative foregrounded transparency. Our 2014 OpenGov flagship initiative – eNEPA - focused on collaboration.

In 2016, the three principles of open government come together as we highlight our plans to continue improving the Federal Permitting Dashboard. Other initiatives we’re considering for our 2016 OpenGov plan include:

  • Creating a new calendar for public meetings to create new channels for communication (coming soon to www.transportation.gov/engage);
  • The National Address Database – a collaboration with the Census Bureau to create an open register of geographic locations for every address in the country;
  • Increasing access to open data through the National Transit Map project, which will bring together open, machine-readable data from transit agencies across America in a first-ever national transit map;
  • Building a ‘no wrong door’ complaint form for reporting disability access concerns to help improve access to mobility for all; and
  • Ladders of Opportunity initiatives to help connect and revitalize communities, like the Every Place Counts Design Challenge and upcoming Every Place Counts Transportation Academy.
