The transportation sector is the source of 29 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. National commitments to reduce emissions 26-28 percent by 2025 and 80 percent or more by 2050, necessitate less energy use and a transition to alternative energy. FHWA is working with States and metropolitan areas to:

• Integrate GHG reduction analysis into transportation planning.
• Deploy infrastructure needed for low carbon fuels.
• Reduce GHG emissions in construction and maintenance practices.
• Improve system and travel efficiencies.
