It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air strives to share materials and ideas that support public education and outreach about cleaner air and simple steps people can take to make a difference. This section provides new ideas and marketing materials for communities looking for inspiration. Please Click on the links below to see how organizations across the country have customized materials and messages for their public education programs.

Education — Brochures

Greater Philadelphia Region

The Air Quality Partnership (AQP) is a public/private coalition dedicated to improving air quality in the Greater Philadelphia Region by providing air quality advisories and educating the public about air quality issues. The AQP is administered by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. The AQP has produced five educational brochures for download by citizens:

New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Health, has developed four educational brochures as part of the CleanAirNJ outreach campaign. Two focus entirely on transportation, which is New Jersey's largest source of smog precursors. The “Clean Ride Pyramid” brochures are designed for two specific audiences — adults (high school and beyond) and children — to help them choose the best, most efficient way to get where they're going. The third brochure is a broader look at smog, how it affects people's health, and what citizens can do to reduce their contribution to its formation as well as tips for protecting their health on high smog days. The fourth brochure encourages motorists to properly refuel their vehicles to minimize spillage and vapor release.

Prize Giveaway

In August 2013, Spokane Clean Air in Spokane, Washington, partnered with a local television station to hold a grand prize drawing for a new commuter bicycle donated by a local bike shop. Participants made a “pledge for clean air” to enter. Contest details are found at: https://www.spokanecleanair.org/news/261/it-all-adds-up-to-cleaner-airenter-to-win-in-august/print.

Public Outreach and Awards

The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) established the Clean Air Champion award to recognize any business, government, or organization operating in the region that is taking proactive steps to improve air quality. Two awards are given — one for commuters and one for fleets. Awardees receive an invitation to be honored at the H-GAC annual Clean Air Action Leadership Awards Program; annual acknowledgement in the Houston Business Journal; a digital badge to display on the organization's website; optional inclusion in H-GAC's marketing campaign; and the opportunity to have the organization/program featured on the H-GAC website. The awardees also receive web-based tools to track the financial, environmental, and traffic improvements caused by the program, as well as free training and assistance from H-GAC to implement or enhance commuter benefits program/clean fleet policies. Public Outreach - Schools

San Joaquin Valley

The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District has implemented the Healthy Air Living Schools (HALS) campaign. HALS is a school-based outreach campaign focused on education, implementation, and utilization of the District's endorsed air quality improvement programs. The program encourages good outdoor air quality practices throughout the various school districts in the San Joaquin Valley. Program components include:

More information on the programs can be found at: http://healthyairliving.com/your-school/halschoolsprogram.htm.

Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources celebrated Clean Air Month in May 2016 by helping teachers lead their students through activities from the Air, Air Everywhere Teacher's Activity Guide. The guide included ten activities that aim to teach 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students about air quality and the importance of clean air. The activities included a poetry contest focused on clean air. The activity guide is found at http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/eek/teacher/air.htm.

The Clean Air Month efforts also included a video of a young man who travels around Milwaukee and shows kids how to “travel wisely” to reduce air emissions and maintain clean air. The video is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLiQn_4ZebU&feature=youtu.be.

Television Ad / Web Video

Kentuckiana Air Education (KAIRE) produced two versions of the “Become a Friend of the Air” video as part of its clean air campaign. The 30-second version can be viewed at https://youtu.be/cETLl9H46bQ, and the full version (13 minutes) is available at https://youtu.be/5QW-sI0rAx4.

KAIRE's website (http://helptheair.org/) also includes clean air tips, opportunities to join the effort, and other resources.

Web Tools — Apps, Widgets, Toolkit Materials

The Maricopa County Air Quality Department's Clean Air Make More campaign provides a variety of tools for download by citizens. The Clean Air Make More app for iPhone, iPad, and Android provides real-time air quality information and suggestions for reducing air pollution. The Clean Air Make More ozone toolkit includes news releases, newspaper articles, social media material, video and audio PSAs, and website widgets. The Desktop Widget provides real-time air quality information on users' Windows or Mac desktop computers. The Summer Ozone website widget helps spread the word about pollution advisories in Maricopa County.
