Fixed Guideway Infrastructure Investment Program

Funded Amount: $750,000,000

Agency: Federal Transit Administration

Description: Provide capital assistance for the modernization of existing fixed guideway systems such as heavy rail, commuter rail, light rail, monorail, trolleybus, aerial tramway, inclined plane, cable car, automated guideway transit, ferryboats, that portion of motor bus service operated on exclusive or controlled rights-of-way, and high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes.
Benefits to Public: Federal support for transit offers transportation alternatives and provides mobility to employment and other destinations for persons with disabilities, the economically disadvantaged, and senior citizens. Major transit reinvestments contribute to the livability of communities, enhance mobility options and reduce energy use.

Capital Investment Grant Program

Funded Amount: $750,000,000

Agency: Federal Transit Administration

Description: The purpose of the Capital Investment Grant program is to provide funding for new fixed guideway transit systems and for extensions of existing systems including heavy rail, light rail, commuter rail, bus rapid transit, streetcars, ferries, and certain corridor-based bus systems.

Benefits to Public: Federal support for transit offers transportation alternatives for all and provides mobility to employment and other destinations for persons with disabilities, the economically disadvantaged, and senior citizens. Major transit investments contribute to the livability of communities by reducing air pollution, offering additional travel capacity during periods of congestion (including peak commuting hours), and promoting compact urban land use patterns that reduce energy use.

Transit Capital Assistance

Funded Amount: $6,900,000,000

Agency: Federal Transit Administration

Description: To assist urbanized and non-urbanized areas, States, and Indian tribes in funding transit capital needs such as: engineering design of transit projects; capital investments in bus and bus-related activities, crime prevention and security equipment, construction of maintenance and passenger facilities; and capital investments in new and existing fixed guideway systems including overhaul, rebuilding of vehicles, track, signals, communications, and computer hardware and software.

Benefits to Public: Federal support for transit infrastructure provides transportation alternatives for all allowing individuals who do not have vehicles, persons with disabilities, people with low income, and senior citizens to have basic mobility to access medical, employment and leisure locations. Investment in transit infrastructure also contributes to the livability of our cities and communities by reducing air pollution, reducing congestion (during peak commuting periods) and promoting urban land use patterns (that reduce energy use).
