Q: How do I start a drug testing business?

Q: I cannot log in to the DATIA website, but I am a member. How do I get registered?
A: Please note: You DO NOT need to login to the site to do ANY of the following:

  1. Find out about DATIA’s upcoming events and resources;
  2. Register for courses or conferences, order publications, or join the organization
  3. Navigate the majority of the tabs on the Web site.

The portions of the website that are exclusive to DATIA members include: eNews archives, DATIA focus archives, the Resources Tab, and the Advocacy Tab.

If you believe you were registered in the past:

  1. Go to http://www.datia.org
  2. Click on “Forgot Login” under the login area on the bottom right-hand side of the page.
  3. Follow instructions

If you have never before registered for the website:

  1. Go to http://www.datia.org;
  2. Click on "Register" on the right hand side under the login area
  3. Complete the form, including your membership number*
  4. You will be approved for the website by our administrator and then you will be able to log in.

Q: I need to update my company’s contact information with DATIA.  How do I do that?
A: If you are a member, please log in and find your company listing in the “Search for Service Providers” area under “Directories” from the menu bar at the top of datia.org. At the bottom of your listing page, click on “To correct or update the listing for your company click here” and follow the instructions.

A: On the datia.org site, go to the “Membership” tab. Select “Membership Application” and fill out the corresponding application. You can also directly access the application at http://datia.org/joinnow.


Q: I need DATIA’s Federal Tax ID and/or a W-9 for payment to DATIA.  How can I get that?

Q: Am I registered for the CPCT or CPC exam?
A: Once you login with the information that was sent to you after your registration, your exam type is listed on the right-hand side either as “CPC” or “CPCT.” If it is the wrong exam type, please call or email Emily Gilcher at This email address is being protected from spambots. Q: I am having technical difficulties with my exam right now. What should I do?
A: If you are having technical difficulties, please call or email Kristina Queen at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 800-355-1257 x20.  If you do not get an immediate answer, please know that your attempt will NOT be counted as a failure. You can log back in shortly and start again. Q: I would like to see the questions I missed on my exam?  How can I do that?
A: Log back into your exam area using your same login and click on “Reports Manager” at the top of the page. Here, you will be able to download a copy of your exam results with a full list of questions you missed. On the far right side of the page under “Actions”, click on the PDF logo to view or download a PDF of your exam report.

Q: I deleted/lost/did not received my login for the exam.  How do I obtain that?

Q: What if I do not renew my certification by the expiration date of June 30?

A: You will just want to renew as soon as possible. Follow the prompts at http://datia.org/certification.


Q: What if I can’t take my exam before July 1?
A: Even though certifications expire on June 30, if you take your exam after that point your certification will be renewed as soon as you take and pass the exam. Your login will be available to you for at least three months after your register regardless of the date.

Q: What if I fail my exam?
A: You have up to 3 attempts to pass your exam. If you do not pass any of those attempts, you will have to wait until September to purchase the exam again.

Q: Can I take the CPC online course for my DOT required 5-year refresher training?

A: Yes, the online CPC course will meet your refresher training requirements. However, you will still need to do the mock collections with a qualified collector (a CPCT or a collector who has been doing DOT collections for over a year).

Q: What are the requirements for recertification as a CPC/CPCT?
A: With DATIA, you'd need to take the recertification exam.
DOT requires that you complete training to their standards as well as 5 Error-Free Mock Collections every 5 years to do DOT collections. See (c) 1: http://www.dot.gov/odapc/part40/40_33. Please note: Mock collections must be overseen by someone who has been doing DOT collections for at least 1 year OR who has taken a Train-the-Trainer course.  When you are training people (CPCT), you will need to oversee these for people.

Q: I need to sign up for my renewal exam, and I don’t have my password?
A: There is no need for a password to sign up for your exam. Simply go to this link to register for your renewal exam: http://datia.org/certificationrenewal.


Q: I would like to register for in-person courses and I don’t have a password. How do I get one?
A: There is no need for a password to register for courses on our website. Simply click on the course you want to take, under the "Education" tabs and then on the link that says “register here” in blue. Then fill out the appropriate information.

Q: One of the collectors on staff at my company left and I want to replace that person with another employee to take their exam.  How do I do that?
A: Once an employee has been registered for an exam and sent their login information, the exam cannot be transferred to another employee. To make a change before the registration has been processed, please contact Emily Gilcher at This email address is being protected from spambots. Q: One of my employees took and passed the CPC/T exam and then left employment with my company.  Can I get a refund?
A: DATIA’s policy states that certifications belong to the individual who is certified and not to the company under which they were certified. Therefore, DATIA does NOT refund payment for certifiied employees based on their employment status. If you would like reimbursement, this is between the company and former employee.

Q: I need to get some of my staff trained in doing DOT collections, what are my options?
A: As a brand new collector, we recommend that you use DATIA’s on-line CPC training here: http://datiaonlinecourses.com/. You can also see if there is a Regional Certified Professional Collector Trainer in your area that is able to perform the training by searching at http://www.datia.org/directories/regional-trainers.html


Q: Where can I get the required 5 mock collections done to complete my training, if I do not use a Regional Trainer?
A: The mock training can physically take place anywhere even via a web camera as long as the mock collection monitor meets any ONE of the following:

  • Be a qualified collector who has regularly conducted DOT drug testing collections for at least a year before serving as a monitor; or
  • Be a qualified collector who has had a “train-the-trainer” course. Such a course could include the mandatory elements of collector qualification training as well as instruction on how to conduct training effectively; or
  • Be a qualified collector who has conducted collector training under Part 40 for at least a year before serving as a monitor.

Monitors in the second and third categories do not need to practice actively as collectors, so long as they have met collector qualification requirements and refresher training requirements per DOT 49 CFR Part 40.33.

Q: I have not been receiving the DATIA Red Book updates, but I believe my subscription is current.  What should I do?

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and include your name, the date of the last update you received, and the email to which Red Book updates should be sent and she will research the status up your subscription and send any missing updates.

Q: When is my publication being shipped?
A: Please allow up to two weeks from date of order to receive your manual/s. Publication orders are shipped weekly via FedEx Ground. If you need your order expedited, please call us at 800-355-1257. Additional charges apply, and since DATIA maintains small supplies of publications due to constantly changing regulations we cannot guarantee delivery less than two weeks depending on current supply of the publication.

Q: Did you receive my payment by check?

A: DATIA receives and processes mail in the order it was received.
