Summary

On March 13, 2015, indictments were unsealed in U.S. District Court, Atlanta, Georgia, which charged Tasheen R. Pickett and Shedrick Giles with conspiracy, interstate transportation of stolen property, and forfeiture related to a scheme to rob customers of their household goods (HHG).  Pickett was also charged with possession of stolen property. On March 11, 2015, OIG agents arrested Pickett at his Probation Officer’s office in Atlanta, Georgia. On March 13, 2015, Shedrick Giles surrendered to OIG agents in Central Islip, New York.    

This investigation was based upon a referral from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Tasheen Pickett owns and operates J and P Moving, Inc. (J&P), a moving company based in Sumter, South Carolina, that purported to provide moving services for individuals seeking to ship their HHG from one location to another. The indictment alleges that J&P never had authority from FMCSA to transport HHGs; nevertheless, J&P would acquire HHGs moving jobs through moving brokers. After acquiring HHGs moving jobs, J&P would travel to the location of the job, load the HHGs into a moving truck under the pretense of providing moving services, and never return the HHGs to the rightful owner. In some instances, when the rightful owner of the HHGs would contact J&P seeking the return of their HHGs, Pickett and other representatives of J&P would provide excuses for the failure to deliver the HHGs, and promise to deliver the HHGs at a later date. Despite making these promises, the HHGs would never be delivered.
