More about AASHTO Bridge Management

AASHTO maintains a bridge management software program named BrM (Bridge Management). Its predecessor, Pontis, was developed in the early 1990's under an FHWA contract with the assistance of the California DOT. BrM uses collected condition data, cost data, benefit data, and agency preservation and improvement policies, standards, and objectives to perform modeling and analyses that support bridge management decision-making. The program can identify present-day bridge performance and needs, forecast future bridge performance and needs, and develop optimal long term preservation and improvement policies and work programs for an inventory of bridges. The software maintenance is guided by a BrM Task Force and User Group.

Originally two DOS versions of the software were furnished to the States in 1992 and 1993. In 1994 AASHTO incorporated the program into their AASHTOWare suite of products. In 1995 the Windows based Version 3.0 was released followed by subsequent 3.X versions in 1996 through 1998. Version 4.0 was released in 2001 followed by subsequent 4.X versions in 2002 through 2004. Then a redevelopment effort began to create a more user friendly program that incorporates state-of-the technology bridge management concepts and architecture. Changes are completed or planned relative to the user interface and customization features, computing and database technology, and the bridge management approach. The redeveloped software is being released in phases.
