About Us
The South Carolina Trucking Association is a nonprofit trade organization that represets all the various parties constituting South Carolina's vibrant trucking industry.
Our mission is to advocate, educate and collaborate for successful trucking operations in SC.
The association was first formed in the 1930s when truck operators found it necessary to do collectively what they could not do individually. Since its inception, the SCTA has been dedicated to the protection, support, and enrichment of its collective membership, while promoting good public policy.
Our History
Humble Beginnings
In the late 1920's truck and bus operators in South Carolina were meeting to discuss issues of mutual concern. These meetings led to the formation of the Motor Carriers Association of South Carolina in 1932 in Greenville, South Carolina with Fred M. Burnette as the first executive secretary.
On November 9, 1933, the Motor Carriers Association of South Carolina under corporate charter became the Motor Transportation Association of South Carolina and moved to Columbia. MTASC's founding fathers were H. C. Mims of Greenville, president; George Weathers of Bowman, vice-president; B. George Price, Walterboro, secretary; and Fred M. Burnette, Greenville, executive secretary and treasurer.
In 1936, Executive Director Bill Love convened the first MTASC "convention" at Twin Lakes in Columbia.
Over the years, South Carolina had become a blockade state on the eastern seaboard with a truck weight limit of 20,000 pounds. The railroads successfully promoted this barrier to disrupt north-south truck movements, and to stifle their competition. These were the first of many competitive battles to come for the organized trucking industry.
Trucking Today
In 1986, the board of directors of the MTASC approved changing the name of the organization to the South Carolina Trucking Association, Inc. All along the way, we have been the only trade association in South Carolina whose mission is to serve the united interests of South Carolinians involved in and dependent upon trucking.
The SCTA membership has grown from 17 dues paying members in 1936...to about 600 members today.
The SCTA membership has grown from 17 dues paying members in 1936, to a high point of almost 900 companies by the mid-nineties, to about 600 members today. The association's carrier members range from small, family-owned businesses with only a few vehicles, to large, national companies with major terminal facilities throughout South Carolina, the southeast and the nation. It is the small businesses that comprise the majority of the membership of the South Carolina Trucking Association.
The SCTA serves as the voice of the trucking industry in South Carolina. It has a staff of full time professionals and owns its headquarters at 2425 Devine Street in Columbia. Its message is heard on a regular basis by the media, the general public, public officials and the government agencies that regulate the business of trucking.
Our leaders are committed to growth, but also developing a larger, stronger core group of active and dedicated members. It is this generation's obligation.
