Implements Air Force Policy Directive (AFPD) 44-1, Medical Operations; Public Laws 101-510 and 102-484; and Department of Defense Directive (DoDD) 6490.1, Mental Health Evaluations of Members of the Armed Forces, October 1, 1997, and supplements Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 6490.4, Requirements for Mental Health Evaluations of Members of the Armed Forces, August 28, 1997. It describes rights for members who are directed by their commanders to undergo a mental health evaluation (MHE) (except for those conducted in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment, and Family Advocacy Programs.) It establishes rules for confidentiality, defines conditions requiring communication between mental health providers (MHP) and commanders, and expands the scope of the Limited Privilege Suicide Prevention (LPSP) program.
