| Project Description: | Forensic studies are a valuable tool in pavement engineering. With the development of the Mechanistic-Empirical Design Guide, the forensic study will be a valuable tool to departments of transportation so that they can verify design decisions or verify mistakes in the design or construction process. Why did the pavement rut? Inferior subgrade, bad mix, or poor construction? Only forensics will allow you to determine this. There are a number of States that conduct forensic studies and there are a number of guidelines that have been developed to assist someone conducting a forensic study. The problem is that there is no published forensic guideline documents and everyone has a different view on how to conduct a forensic study. The project would be a two-phase study. The first phase would be to conduct a National Forensic Workshop. The workshop would focus on what States and other organizations are doing in the area of forensics and would include field presentations of some forensic techniques. There would be invited speakers and funding for speakers' travel and for some States. Phase two of the project would be to develop forensic guidelines using the input from the workshop and the current existing documents on conducting forensic studies. | |
