Project Description: | Develop broad, consistent, and unambiguous definitions for Remaining Service Life (RSL) for the many different objectives that require RSL of inservice and new pavements and procedures for determining them at both the project and network level in light of current and emerging design, contracting, maintenance, and management practices. | |
Goals: |
The objective of this research is to (starting with the many different objectives that require Remaining Service Life (RSL) of inservice and new pavements):
(1) Develop broad definitions for Remaining Service Life (RSL) that meet the above objectives and are consistent and unambiguous.
(2) Review current and future data availability in defining the measures and processes for determining RSL.
(3) Develop procedures for determining RSL at both the project and network level to meet these objectives in light of current and emerging design, contracting, maintenance, and management practices.

Test Methodology: | Literature review, development of conceptual framework, analysis methodologies, and data needs. Review approaches used in pavements and other similar assets and develop methodologies for the determination of pavement remaining life consistent with intended use. | |
Expected Benefits: | The existing remaining service life definitions and procedures vary widely, inconsistent in some cases, and are not well suited for many emerging needs. Sound definitions and procedures for remaining service life are not only beneficial to determine our pavement network's net worth and future funding needs accurately, but are critical under emerging innovative contracting and project financing methods. | |
