WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is taking a proactive safety approach to protect vehicles from malicious cyber-attacks and unauthorized access by releasing proposed guidance for improving motor vehicle cybersecurity.

WASHINGTON – Leaders from the aviation and automotive industries joined with top U.S. Department of Transportation officials today to discuss how safety lessons from aviation can be applied to the auto industry. The Enhancing Safety Culture in Transportation forum was co-hosted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration, and was attended by top officials from U.S. airlines and aerospace and automobile manufacturers.

U.S. DOT Imposes Largest Civil Penalty in NHTSA’s History on Takata for Violating the Motor Vehicle Safety Act; Agency Accelerates Recalls to Get Safe Air Bags into U.S. Vehicles

WASHINGTON – The Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issued two orders designed to protect the traveling public from defective Takata air bag inflators. The orders impose the largest civil penalty in NHTSA’s history for Takata’s violations of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, and for the first time use NHTSA’s authority to accelerate recall repairs to millions of affected vehicles.

OXON HILL, MD – As part of National Heatstroke Prevention Day, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) joined Safe Kids Worldwide in urging parents and caregivers to take proper precautions to prevent child heatstroke tragedies in hot vehicles. NHTSA also unveiled a new technical report to help manufacturers develop effective technology innovations to prevent the dozens of child heatstroke deaths that occur each year.
