Infrared-Based Screening System

GoalTo develop a set of performance-based specifications that States may use to procure devices that meet the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements for quality and effectiveness for detecting wheel hazards.
BackgroundSince 2007, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been involved in data collection efforts involving an Infrared-Based Screening System (IBSS) developed by International Electronic Machine Corporation, called the Smart Infrared Inspection System (SIRIS). Since 2007, testing has included proof of concept, pilot testing, and an extensive field operational test in which SIRIS was used to screen for vehicle brake, tire, and bearing defects in a real-world environment. Currently, ORNL is developing performance and test specifications for these types of systems.
SummaryThe findings from the past research will be used to develop a set of performance specifications for an IBSS that are "outcome-based" relative to the system's ability to determine defects from a given group of real-world vehicles.
OutcomesPerformance specifications and field testing effectiveness data.
