You will also learn about the “Deference to Expertise” High Reliability Organization (HRO) principle and the connection between patient safety and patient-centered care. In addition, we invite you access TeamSTEPPSTeam Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) is an evidence-based teamwork system designed to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare. TeamSTEPPS consists of a collection of instructions, materials and tools to help drive a successful teamwork initiative from the initial planning to implementation through to sustainment. The system is designed to improve patient safety using a three-phase approach: Phase I Assessment: Facility determines organizational readiness; Phase II Planning, Training & Implementation: Facility “decides what to do” and “makes it happen;” and Phase III Sustainment: Facility spreads the improvements in teamwork performance, clinical processes and outcomes resulting from the TeamSTEPPS initiative.TeamSTEPPS Continuing Education Credit planning information and multiple tools and resources via our Patient Safety Treasure Chest. Five Hours in the PACU? MetroHealth Uses TeamSTEPPS to Improve Patient Transfer from the OR to the ICU (March Webinar) – Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

AHRQ is hosting a webinar on the implementation of TeamSTEPPS as part of a collaborative effort to improve the triaging of patients from the OR to the ICU. This session will feature two TeamSTEPPS champions from the MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) who will discuss how the need for the TeamSTEPPS intervention was identified, the role of the electronic health record (EHR) in the implementation effort, and the results of this cross-unit effort.
Key Objectives:
- Describe how MetroHealth used its TeamSTEPPS Action Councils to identify a need for a TeamSTEPPS intervention to improve the triaging of patients from the OR to the ICU
- Present the collaborative TeamSTEPPS implementation between the OR and ICU
- Discuss how the implementation efforts were integrated into the HER
- Present the results of the implementation thus far, as well as discuss plans for long-term sustainment.
