About Us
Work zones are a necessary part of maintaining and upgrading our highway system. The combination of more work zones and heavier traffic volumes means work zones are having a greater effect on roadway systems. The American public has cited work zones as second only to poor traffic flow in causing dissatisfaction with the roadway system.
The FHWA Work Zone Management Program is working to "make work zones work better" by providing transportation practitioners with high-quality products, tools, and information that can be of value in planning, designing, and implementing safer, more efficient, and less congested work zones. The Work Zone Management Web site serves as a central location for work zone-related resources and is updated with new information and resources on a frequent basis. These resources include:
- Smarter Work Zones, are among a few select initiatives being promoted by the FHWA Every Day Counts Program. Smarter Work Zones are innovative policies and practices used to incrementally and continuously improve work zone management to minimize traffic delays and maintain the safety of all road users and workers. These strategies include coordination of roadway construction projects to reduce work zone impacts and using technology applications to dynamically manage traffic in the work zone environment.
- Comprehensive information and guidance for implementing the Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule (23 CFR 630 Subpart J).
- Peer-to-Peer Program that provides State and Local transportation agencies easy access to knowledgeable peers across a range of work zone issues, at no cost to these agencies.
- Best Practices Guidebook, which includes recommended "state of the practice" approaches, procedures, and technologies for work zone mobility and safety management, collected from State and Local transportation agencies.
- Work Zone Self Assessment, used by each FHWA Division Office and partner State on an annual basis to measure their current state-of-practice and identify future work zone quality improvement efforts.
- Work zone training courses, to help practitioners plan, design, and implement safe and effective work zones.
- Current news related to work zones, from both national and international sources.
- Publications and studies on a variety of work zone topics, including work zone ITS, traffic analysis tools for work zones, contracting methods, construction strategies, public information and outreach for work zones, and others.
The Work Zone Management Program maintains a distribution list of people interested in receiving publications when they are printed and email notices of important work zone-related information. Work Zone Management Program Contacts
The Work Zone Management Program resides in the FHWA Headquarters Office of Operations and is staffed by work zone subject matter experts who coordinate and manage the delivery of products, tools, and technical assistance for widespread use across the highway community. These staffers coordinate their efforts with representatives from the FHWA Resource Center, FHWA Headquarters Offices of Safety and Infrastructure, and FHWA's research staff to gain expertise and input to the Work Zone Management Program from a cross-cutting perspective.
