North American Fatigue Management Program

Goal

To develop guidelines and materials that enable motor carriers to implement a comprehensive Fatigue Management Program (FMP) and means of delivering a FMP to motor carriers throughout North America.

Background

The North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP) is a collaborative initiative to develop a comprehensive, integrated FMP for the commercial motor carrier industry, operating under various regulatory jurisdictions of North America.Partners in this collaborative research project are the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Transport Canada, Alberta Transportation, Alberta Employment and Immigration, the Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators.

Summary

The project is currently in Phase IV, which involves the development of materials, guidelines, standards and processes necessary for a motor carrier to implement a comprehensive and effective FMP. The elements of the FMP will address corporate culture, education and training, sleep disorder screening and treatment, scheduling and tools, and fatigue monitoring and management technologies.

This project is completed. The learning modules are complete.

Status

The NAFMP Web site was launched July 2013 at www.nafmp.org.
