Job Summary: This is a Student Trainee position under the Pathways Internship Program. As a fire protection engineering intern you will serve as a member of a Volpe team supporting senior engineers. You will be given a wide range of tasks and developmental assignments meant to enhance your engineering skills and professional knowledge of project management as well as the development, evaluation, and operation of transportation systems. Positions are located in Cambridge, MA.

The ideal candidate for this position is pursuing a degree in professional engineering (preferably fire protection or chemical) and has a desire to use computer aided engineering and computational methods to assist with the investigation and analysis of deficiencies related to fire safety/code compliance and improving occupational safety at transportation facilities.

Job Summary: This is a Student Trainee position under the Pathways Internship Program. The employee applies principles of engineering psychology that include but are not limited to, research into human capabilities, factors and the limitations in relation to equipment and machine usage.

The ideal candidate for this position is receiving a degree in one of the following fields (or equivalent): Human Factors; Human Factors Psychology; Human-Computer (or Human-System) Interaction; Engineering Psychology; Industrial/Organizational Psychology; or Industrial Engineering. Academic and/or work experience in conducting transportation human factors research and evaluation. Possible project work may include evaluating human performance in a transportation setting on a personal and organizational level, assisting in improving safety across transportation modes, assisting with program evaluation to improve the outcome of federal government safety research.

This is an Excepted Service appointment. As part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee’s educational program requirements have been completed. As part of our teams, you will contribute to the design and implementation of Federal transportation programs, strategic plans, and qualitative evaluations. Relevant coursework includes courses that involve analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc., which provide an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation.
