Non-Governmental Organizations

The National Research Council recommends and makes Research Associateship awards to outstanding scientists and engineers as guest researchers at the participating laboratories.  The objectives of the Research Associateship Programs are (1) to provide postdoctoral and senior scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability opportunities for research on problems, largely of their own choice that are compatible with the interests of the sponsoring laboratories and (2) to, thereby, contribute to the overall efforts of the laboratories.  For recent doctoral graduates, the Research Associateship Programs provide an opportunity for concentrated research in association with selected members of the permanent professional laboratory staff.   FHWA offers a number of opportunities for research at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC).  For more information, see http://nrc58.nas.edu/RAPLab10/Opportunity/Program.aspx?LabCode=27.

It assists the Transportation Research Board in its role of stimulating research and serving as a national clearinghouse for research activities.

International

The European Conference of Transport Research Institutes (ECTRI) is an international non-profit organization that was founded in April 2003.  Its members are 20 major transport research institutes or universities from European countries. Together, they account for more than 3000 European scientific and research staff in the field of transport.  ECTRI’s aim is to help build the “European Research Area” (ERA) in surface transport by cooperation in thematic and process oriented working groups, task forces, Framework Programme projects, and seminars.

Formed in 1989 as the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) is a registered International Association with a permanent Secretariat based in Brussels governed by the Directors of each of the national institutes.  It provides a coordinated structure for the interests of the thirty national research and technical centers from the member states in the European Union, the EFTA countries and the rest of Europe.  FEHRL is engaged in road engineering research topics including safety, materials, environmental issues, telematics and economic evaluation.  Research capacity is provided by the national institutes and makes use of the wide range of test facilities available to them.

The Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) conducts research across a wide range of topics and disciplines. To supplement the expertise of the permanent staff, it is important to bring in researchers with the appropriate backgrounds to investigate specific problems at short-term basis. Through the Exploratory Advanced Research (EAR) Program, FHWA utilizes the Resident Associates (or Postdoctoral Fellows) program of the National Research Council (NRC) for this purpose. The NRC provides a process for selecting candidates on a competitive merit basis and subsequently for administration of the Resident Fellows during their tenures at FHWA. [More]
