Join the FHWA management staff: Opening for a Research Technical Director for Safety Research and Development


A challenging leadership opportunity exists in the FHWA Office of Safety Research and Development for a Research Transportation Specialist (Technical Director) (GS-15). The person selected for this position will provide technical advice to the Office Director and to the Associate Administrator for Research, Development and Technology (RD&T) on the state of practice, trends, and new opportunities related to Safety.  As the primary technical contact for Safety R&D, he/she and will lead the development of safety research projects and ensure the technical quality of the research and other products produced by the office and work with others to coordinate the deployment of results.  He/she will coordinate the Safety R&D budget and oversee the implementation of programs and project tracking systems in the Office.  He/she will also serve as a team leader and will be delegated a variety of supervisory responsibilities for the team.

The ideal candidate for this position possesses a degree in a transportation-related field, preferably a Ph.D.  He/she should be a recognized national expert with at least 10 years of experience in highway research and technology issues, programs, and policies.  A background in highway safety and a noteworthy list of publications would also be considered advantageous.  Strong leadership, organization and people skills are a must.
