Maintenance Workshops for Southern Africa

General Information

 

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in cooperation with the United States Department of Transportation’s Safe Skies for Africa program (SSFA), is pleased to present the FAA Runway Safety and Pavement Maintenance Workshops for the SADC states. This event is hosted by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) in Johannesburg, South Africa. The workshop will be presented in two parts: Pavement Maintenance from March 17 to 20, 2014 and Runway Safety from March 24 to 28, 2014. The workshops are being presented by the FAAs Office of Airport & Safety Standards and the Airport Technology R&D Branch (ANG-E26). The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will make a special presentation during the Runway Safety week of March 24, 2014.

These workshops are open to regulators, federal policymakers, aerodrome inspectors, aerodrome managers from CAA’s, aviation wildlife hazard experts, aerodrome operations and maintenance personnel and airline operators nominated by their organizations to attend.

These workshops will provide a forum for attendees to engage in discussions and presentations about runway and pavement safety, including improving runway safety areas, runway excursion mitigation airport emergency planning and technology developments. The course instruction and all materials will be presented in English.

Highlights of the workshop agenda include:

  • Evaluating an airport’s runway safety culture
  • Establishing and implementing an Airport Runway Safety Program
  • Airport Pavement Design and Evaluation
  • Runway Incursion Mitigation
  • Pavement Management Systems

 

The Pavement Maintenance Workshop will commence on Monday, March 17, 2014 and conclude on Thursday, March 20, 2014. Friday, March 21, 2014 is a national holiday in South Africa. The SACAA will host a social activity for the participants on this date. The Runway Safety workshop will commence on Monday, March 24, 2014 and conclude on Friday afternoon, March 28, 2014. Thanks to the support of the SSFA program and the generosity of the SACAA, there is no registration fee for the workshops. Participants are only responsible for their travel, accommodations and per diem.

Note: We encourage participants to bring a laptop computer to the sessions. The dress code for the workshop is business casual.

Important Visa Information

To ensure hassle-free immigration clearance in Johannesburg, all participants are encouraged to obtain visas (according to your consular requirements) from the South African Embassy or Consulate in their respective countries of residence prior to arriving in Johannesburg. Please also travel with proof of your current inoculations.

Transportation


Airline Reservations:

Participants must make their own air transport arrangements from their residence to O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Ground Transportation: Attendees are responsible for arranging transportation from the airport to their hotel. We recommend you arrive at the O.R. Tambo International Airport Johannesburg which is only 7km from the Birchwood Hotel.
