Thomas Littleton, PhD, Associate Administrator

Thomas Littleton is the inaugural Associate Administrator for Transit Safety and Oversight at the Federal Transit Administration in Washington, D.C.

The FTA Office of Safety and Oversight administers a national transit safety program and monitors program compliance to ensure safe, reliable, and equitable transit service in accordance with FTA policy and regulatory requirements. The FTA Office of Transit Safety and Oversight implements and oversees safety and security standards for all modes of public transit in the United States. Additionally, the FTA Office of Transit Safety and Oversight provides programmatic oversight to more than $11 billion each year.  This position leverages Tom’s extensive background in safety operations to usher in a new era of transit safety.

Tom joined the FTA from the Federal Aviation Administration where he led their headquarters accident investigation division. 

He is a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, fighter pilot and commander. Following retirement from the Air Force, Tom worked extensively in the aerospace industry and as a private military contractor.

Tom has received his PhD in Business Administration from Northcentral University in Arizona.
