As the FAA carries out its mission to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world, we are accountable to the American public. The views of communities–including local residents, the general public, and stakeholders–are important to the FAA as we take the next steps to advance the national airspace system. The FAA is committed to inform and involve the public, engage with communities and give meaningful consideration to community concerns and views as we makes aviation decisions that affect them.

Performance Based Navigation is delivering more direct routes, decongesting skies, and increasing efficiencies in major metropolitan areas through Metroplex and Equivalent Lateral Spacing Operations.

New Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures use satellite-based precision to fly more direct routes, saving fuel and time, increasing traffic flow, and resulting in fewer carbon emissions. These procedures are being or have been implemented in airports across the NAS.

The FAA's Metroplex initiatives are improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in major metropolitan areas across the country. Metroplex provides a successful way to de-conflict airspace in congested areas with multiple airports, which expands efficiency gains that ripple to other areas. The FAA has completed or is at some point in the study, design, evaluation, or implementation phase for 12 metroplexes.

Below is an illustration of the process the teams follow over a three to four-year project and key opportunities for community involvement.
