Graduate Medical Education

The National Capital Center offers subspecialty, fellowship training in Hematology-Oncology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The fellowship is a three year program open to Army, Navy, and Air Force Medical Corps officers who have completed a residency in Internal Medicine. The program is approved for 4 fellows each year.

The fellowship is accredited by the ACGME and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Cancer Center has been named an Academic Center of Excellence. Board pass rates among prior graduates remains 100%!

The program is organized to provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to a wide variety of Oncology and Hematology diseases and disorders. Fellows are exposed to all aspects of Hematology-Oncology across a wide range of patient demographics. Upon completion of the training program, fellows are board eligible to practice both Hematology and Oncology. Through their different rotations and experiences, fellows will receive training in bone marrow transplant, sickle cell disease, malignant hematology, benign hematology and solid tumors.

The majority of the training occurs at WRNMMC. However, fellows have external rotations at the National Heart and Blood Institute and the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Allogenic transplant program, Sickle Cell Disease Clinic, Blood Bank and Palliative Care Clinics. They also rotate in the Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center for a rotation in Special Coagulations. The third year of fellowship is generally a dedicated research year with fellows doing clinical research at various institutions such as Johns Hopkins, NHLBI or NCI, Georgetown or in some cases pursuing an MPH or working at the FDA. All fellows are funded to attend several courses throughout the training period to broaden their educational opportunities, including ASH and ASCO, and a board review course.

Fostering an outstanding educational experience is the primary focus of the training program and fellows receive didactic lectures and one-on-one teaching every day. The program's faculty is comprised of highly qualified, board certified Hematology-Oncology specialists.

Clinical research is expected and all prior graduates have published at least one manuscript and given at least one presentation at a National level meeting since the initiation of the program.

Rotations: The Hematology-Oncology Service offers rotations for 4th year medical Students and Internal Medicine Residents.
