Changes to the National Center's Data System and an Update on Recent School Travel Trends

Evaluation is a key component of Safe Routes to School (SRTS), and the National Center for Safe Routes to School’s data collection system and all of its users have greatly contributed to the understanding of SRTS programs and their impacts. The system, which as of October 2016 contained 1.78 million student travel tally and parent survey questionnaires from over 14,000 schools located across the 50 states and Washington, DC, has informed decisions at the local, state, and Federal levels and has supported a number of research studies about walking and bicycling.

Last month, the National Center rolled out new features to streamline administration of online parent surveys and travel tallies that are ready for you to use. Although FHWA’s Safe Routes to School clearinghouse funding ends in 2016, the National Center for Safe Routes to School stays committed to supporting student travel data collection.

The webinar briefly presents the most recent walking and bicycling numbers and other findings from parent surveys from 2009 – 2014. Monitoring these trends could not happen without the local and state programs that use the data system.

Most of the presentation time provides an overview of recent changes and lead attendees on a step-by-step tour of the online data system, responding to attendee questions throughout the presentation.
