FMCSA’s Protect Your Move campaign aims to help fight moving fraud by educating consumers about how to plan an interstate move.

Most moving companies are legitimate businesses that do quality work. But in recent years, a growing number of complaints have been filed against interstate movers – and many of those complaints spring from the fraudulent practices of a small percentage of dishonest movers known as rogue movers.

Congress focused important attention on the problem of rogue movers through hearings and the funding of a consumer outreach program. This attention helped create the first partnership between Federal, state and local officials, and the moving industry itself, and led to the creation of the Protect Your Move campaign.

Helping You Protect Your Move

Protect Your Move is part of FMCSA's national household goods compliance and enforcement program, which promotes increased compliance through data analysis, investigations, enforcement, and public education and outreach activities. FMCSA, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, regulates more than 5,000 interstate household goods motor carriers and brokers. Interstate moving companies must obtain operating authority from FMCSA to perform household goods moves while remaining in compliance with Federal regulations.

FMCSA maintains a database of registered movers, along with a database of consumer moving fraud complaints. While FMCSA does not conduct criminal enforcement activities against rogue movers, it works closely with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to assist them in their pursuit of criminal charges in egregious cases.
