Audit Initiated of the Information Technology Controls over FAA’s Large Terminal Radar Approach Control Facilities

Self-Initiated
Project ID:
14F3012F000

Summary

FAA’s terminal radar approach control (TRACON) facilities guide aircraft that are approaching and departing airports within a 40 miles radius and up to 10,000 feet. In 2013, FAA’s eleven largest TRACON facilities provided over 12 million instructions to move aircraft through the critical approach and departure phases of flight. Because the air traffic controllers at these facilities rely heavily on information systems to keep aircraft safely separated, we are initiating this audit. Our objectives are to determine whether: (1) FAA is identifying security risks within TRACON information systems and properly mitigating them; and (2) FAA’s contingency plans for these facilities limit the effects of the loss of availability.
