Overview

FMCSA proudly supports America’s Armed Forces and is committed to assisting veterans seeking to transition from U.S. Military service to new careers in the transportation industry.  Several Agency initiatives promote career opportunities for men and women who served in the U.S. Military, including the Reserves, the National Guard, and the U.S. Coast Guard, while helping to address the nation’s shortage of commercial vehicle drivers. Current projections show the transportation sector needs to hire an additional 4.6 million workers in the next seven years, many of those in the trucking industry. For those who operated large vehicles while in uniform, these initiatives clear a path to new careers in transportation and provide the truck and bus industries with skilled, safe drivers.

FAST Act Initiatives in Development

FMCSA’s efforts to support our Service Members are bolstered by several provisions in the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) signed by President Obama in December 2015.

Existing FMCSA Programs

The Agency’s numerous initiatives expedite the transition of U.S. Military personnel into careers as commercial vehicle drivers.

Military Skills Test Waiver Program

Veterans who drove heavy duty vehicles in the U.S. Military can earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL) – and find work that fits their experience – without having to take the road test portion of their State’s licensing exam.

Partnership Initiatives

FMCSA continues to work closely with a diverse group of partners to make opportunities available to U.S. Military veterans.
