The Long Island Rail Road Company (LIRR) has requested a waiver from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regarding the Buy America requirements contained in 49 U.S.C. 24405(a). The request pertains to two components of the Amtrak catenary system that supplies electrical power to Amtrak’s trains on the Northeast Corridor. The two components are high-speed section insulator and conical coupling. LIRR contends that these components of the catenary system are not available from a U.S. source.
Before deciding whether to grant this waiver, FRA is requesting public comments. A detailed justification for LIRR’s waiver request is available here.
