ITS Education and Career Resources

ITS for Students

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) provide solutions to a variety today’s transportation problems. ITS technologies apply advanced information and communication to enhance mobility, reduce congestion, improve safety, and can offer environmental improvements to surface transportation networks. Students need various levels of training related to ITS to prepare for the current and future transportation workforce. In general, these learning categories include: a general awareness of ITS use for transportation management; an understanding of ITS main concepts, including cost/benefits, best practices, and lessons learned; and a detailed mastery of the specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities required to design, implement, operate, and maintain ITS networks, including evaluation of these systems.

ITS education requires a cross-disciplinary approach to developing knowledge and skills in variety of disciplines including traditional subject areas such as civil engineering as well as non-traditional areas subjects like computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering, cryptography, and urban planning.

The ITS PCB Program encourages students and faculty to explore the resources in this section to advance ITS learning. Search the site to learn about free courses offered by our partner the Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE), watch a video about various ITS related career opportunities, and explore other resources on ITS research, education programs, and professional organizations.

Academic White Papers

ITS PCB White Paper – University Programs in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS): The Evolving Transportation Engineering Discipline – This paper discusses the growing demand for university degree and certificate programs to meet the emerging needs of Connected Vehicle (CV) and related technologies for transportation. It examines Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), CV, the changing workforce demographics, the education and training efforts of the ITS Professional Capacity Building (PCB) Program. The paper then describes the need for changes in the University engineering discipline to incorporate evolving transportation topics. The paper includes a series of recommendations to address these needs.
