Volpe Kicks Off New Speaker Series with Keynote Address by Secretary Foxx

Our nation is entering a transportation landscape rich with possibility, and full of challenges. As we witness the emergence of driverless cars, unmanned package deliveries, smart cities and  other exciting changes, technology is going to play a key role in ensuring the safety and reliability of our transportation system, while also offering more Americans the ability to reach economic opportunity.

Simply put, technology offers us a powerful ability to improve the way we live and move going forward. That’s why Volpe, The National Transportation Systems Center, is excited to be launching The Future of Transportation: Safety, Opportunity, and Innovation. This four-month program will bring together top innovators who are thinking beyond the horizon about the big issues defining transportation in the 21st century—and will advance the ongoing conversation started by Secretary Foxx’s framework for the future, Beyond Traffic 2045.

And we can think of no better way to kick off this exciting conversation than by hosting U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. On Monday, June 27, the Secretary will be speaking speaking at Volpe’s Cambridge, Massachusetts, campus from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This event is open to the public and you can register to join the Secretary in person or via live-streamed webinar. These events are meant to be as interactive as possible – following the Secretary’s remarks, audience members will be able to share ideas and engage with him  during a Q&A period.

We are looking forward to a fruitful discussion on Monday – but this is only the beginning. Volpe will be hosting a total of ten events featuring distinguished speakers from June to October:

  • A special joint panel on urban mobility with Robin Chase, co-founder and former CEO of Zipcar and founder of Veniam, and Anthony Townsend, PhD, senior research scientist at New York University. Mark K. Dowd, deputy assistant secretary for Research and Technology at the U.S. Department of Transportation, will facilitate this panel.

Thank you for hosting what I hope will be a well attended and well received event! I think it’s great that you are acknowledging the impact drone technology will likely have on our economy and transportation systems in the coming decades.
