Highway Traffic Safety Division

Innovative Training for Today’s Transportation Professional

The Highway Traffic Safety Division was established in 1974 in direct support of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) mission to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce economic costs due to road traffic crashes, through education, research, safety standards, and enforcement activity.  The Transportation Safety Institute serves as the training unit for several NHTSA Offices: Research and Program Development (RPD), Regional Operations and Program Delivery (ROPD), Office of Communications and Consumer Information (OCCI), and the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA)

As a steward for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Highway Traffic Safety Division is responsible for equipping highway safety professionals at the national, state, and local levels with the core competencies they need to reduce traffic crashes and improve the nation’s highway safety programs. Through the use of both instructor-led training (ILT) and e-learning technologies, the Division develops and delivers innovative and responsive training courses to meet the needs of the highway traffic safety industry.

Highway Traffic Safety Division Staff

The training staff is comprised of TSI course managers, associate and contract staff. All are recognized highway safety professionals and subject matter experts. A team of instructors is selected to conduct each course or seminar. The team is selected based upon varied background, diverse knowledge, and experience in traffic safety.
